How Gelesen handles both family friendly and mature themed stories

How Gelesen handles both family-friendly and mature themed stories.

During the brainstorming phase for Gelesen, the decision regarding its content rating swiftly settled on 12+, while still giving the user the experience of a more mature content rating. This choice diverged from the norm among many social apps, where such a rating often necessitates stringent content restrictions or opting for a mature content rating (18+).

With Gelesen, we aimed to  preserves the family-friendly user experience across different age groups without compromising on content control.

Right from the beginning, it was crucial for users to retain full control over their data, prompting the implementation of an export and import feature.

Expanding on this functionality, offline and online modes were introduced, providing users with the flexibility to choose between a family-friendly theme with the option to share their story within the Story World (Community), or a more mature theme that restricts sharing to exporting and importing only.

With this unique semi-decentralized approach, if the user opted for the latter, we will have no knowledge of what the user does with their story, nor with whom they share it. This puts us at a mental, legal and moral ease of mind.

For users who opted for the family-friendly approach, we still try to have a near zero knowledge approach.

This can be achieved for example by utilizing on-device machine learning models which analyze inappropriate images and videos directly on their device, or by utilizing cloud-based machine learning models, which retain no data after completing their task.

Further, we try to only collect the most basic and required data, which allows us to further make Gelesen better.
